Weather station dialed-in for summer storms

I think I finally have the weather station fine tuned for reliability. I ordered the Davis Vantage Pro2 Plus unit a few years ago (with a USB data logger which is bad-by-design and should be recalled). Basically, it locks up after only a few hours of transmitting, requiring reboot. There is no hack or fix that actually works, trust me!

After countless hours of troubleshooting and message boards (always check hardware before software, especially if you’re a script-foggie, knucklehead like myself), I called Davis and made them send me (FOC) an old-school, serial port data logger. Then I had to remember what a serial port looked like; one out of 6 computers in the house actually had one. Man things change; I remember when serial ports… Nonetheless, it seems to have done the trick and inspired me to do some upgrading to the N GA Weather site:

Frontpage:

  • added AJAX updating - the data update real-time with purty active colors and trend arrows (w/o having to refresh the page)
  • added an advisory/watch/warning banner - a warning will appear at the top of the page when severe weather threatens the area
  • added count-up timer next to “Current” to show when the last data update occured
  • added Quick Forecast and Current Conditions
  • added UV Index and Solar Radiation data
  • Live Weather Page:

  • added current conditions text - still tweaking the dawn/dusk/uv settings for those times of the day
  • added lake water temp gauge with daily highs & lows
  • added “webcam” button - pulldown for 7 local webcams for quick weather analyses
  • added “lightning” button - live lightning strike data, a must for planning summer lake activities, and the strike indicator is less than 100 yards from shoreline
  • Other Pages:

  • added AJAX “gizmo” to right top of pages that gives a quick, real-time overview of current weather station data
