Uncle Sam wants your boat dock

Fannin County mailed tax notices (haven’t received ours) for the new 2007 boat dock tax. Be prepared to be taxed at the rate of 40% of the fair market value of your dock (total dock value x .008 = ~annual total tax bill) unless it’s valued at less that $7500. They’re asking for the dimensions and approximate value for each permitted dock. So much for the property tax freeze, just like the great “tax break” that went into my truck’s gas tank last summer.

Furthermore, Union County (Lake Nottely) sees boat docks as real property (like a shed for example) and that makes sense. When it’s high-&-dry for so many months out of the year, mainly because the TVA’s generating hydro revenue, it’s definitely no longer a “dock” but more an expensive, wall-less, muddy shed.

I received my appraisal form this week. It also asked for type of construction, size of upper levels, type of canopy, if it has electricity and number of storage units.

What do we do to get Fannin Co. to start taxing all of the ATV’s, tractors, construction equipment, etc. that are not on the personal property tax registry?
