Lake Fishing

I was flipping through the DNR NW/NE GA fishing guides trying to motivate myself into some cooler weather fly-fishing (Toccoa River, below the dam), and I noticed that the DNR claims that Blue Ridge Lake “is the best destination in Georgia for catching smallmouth bass”. Did not know that, might be fun on a fly rod before dusk or right after dawn.

I see a lot of white bass in our cove, and I’ve never seen fish hunt in gangs as these do. Like coyotes will use one dog to run prey into a pack ambush, I’ve observed white bass run a chase fish to push baitfish into jaws of the awaiting gang. They do this along the shoreline in about 6 inches of water so it’s quite a show.

According to the DNR, the best fishing times for white bass(and walleye) are February through March. Incidentally, for smallmouth, the best times are April through October.

Hi! I will be staying on the lake for a week starting this Saturday. Would like to rent a small fishing boat for the week that I could mount a small 6 H.P. motor to. So far, all I can find online are Pontoons and jet skis. Any idea were I can rent one? Help would be apreciated.

There was an article in the local paper a week ago about a 43 lb catfish caught in Lake Blue Ridge. I think Blue Ridge holds the record for the largest catfish in Georgia t 48 lb but that was back in the 40’s.

I was brought up on Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Before the lake was inundated with boats, fishing of all kinds was terrific. The white fish, talked about, above, would feed in the early morning (best time to fish) or just before dusk. As a little boy, I would motor out in the lake and watch the white fish swarm like locusts, encircling their prey and closing in on them. They would be just below the surface of the water so you could see their fins. They would be so frantic that they would send “white water” up in the air. There were always numerous swarms of the fish. I must say that for all the times I tried to catch one, I was never succesful, even while trying every type of bait available during those years. Then, all of a sudden, one summer they were all gone. Too bad, because even if I never caught one, it was a thrill to watch them!

lake blue ridge is the last remaining georgia lake containing primarily smallmouth, the lake also contains largemouth & spotted bass. spotted bass & smallmouths don’t belong together, over time the smallmouths disappear because or the spots. if you catch spotted bass take them home or out of the lake. smallmouths once thrived in lake chatuge, spots were introduced and the smallmouths now are virtually extinct from lake chatuge while the spots thrive today. don’t get me wrong i love fishing for spots, however blue ridge hopefully will remain a smallmouth lake.

My wife and I just bought a cute little cabin on 8 acres approximately a quarter of a mile from the Toccoa River, seven miles from town. I am excited about going fly fishing, a sport I have never tried before. Is there anyone that can tell me when the best time to fly fish on the Toccoa River and anywhere I can learn the fundamentals of fly fishing.

I have a small pond in Copper Hill TN that is need of some spotted or largemouth bass to control the baitfish population. The previous owner stocked it with some good size rainbow and brown trout…only a few are left as the pond gets quite muddy when it rains hard but clears in a couple of days. The predominant species seems to be chub and yellow perch.

Can you tell me if the spotted or largemouth bass fishing in Lake Blue Ridge is any good? I have a kayak that I can throw on top of the car and pretty much launch from anyhwhere. I’d like to catch a few larger bass and transplant them to my pond. Any suggestions for likely spots would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

HI, love the lake cam keep it going! There are a couple of comments about the spots in blue ridge lake . We need everyone to come togather and do what is the right thing and take them out! people can go to any lake in GA to catch a spot ! But you can’t catch a BRONZE BACK in those lakes! keep the spots out !!!!!!!!

    StevenApril 18th, 2007 at 12:33 pm

Definitely Agree!!! Get rid of those spots!!!

    brantley aikenJune 10th, 2007 at 12:03 am

guide & ga. outdoor news fishing reports writer nathan lewis ( i belive thats his name), wrote he recomended spotted bass removal if you catch one on lake blue ridge. the word is starting to get out about removing all spotted bass caught. eat them or throw them up in the woods, you are right blue ridge is the only place to catch a bronzeback in ga.

Went out on the lake today. Caught absolutely nothing. Tried almost everything possible to try. Used night crawlers, spoons, rooster tails, poppers and virtually anything out there. Didn’t catch a dang thing. Ive asked everyone that fishes here and the keep saying night crawlers. Any help into what we should use or where to fish?

Try main lake points with shadraps and topwater. Early in the morning and late in the evening are gonna be your best bet. You also might be able to catch some largemouths in the timber upriver with floating worms after the sun comes up. Good luck !

Try main lake points early in the morning or late in the evening with shapraps and topwater. Last time we went we caught some largemouth upriver on some of the timber up there. We were throwing floating worms. Good luck !

I was on a vacation to Lake Blue ridge last weekend and thought I would post a little about how the fishing was in August. I mainly fish underwater sructure in the main body of the lake with green pumpkin finesse worms, caught most of my fish in the afternoon, with a few fish suprisingly coming up to hit a zara spook around 3:00 p.m.? Fishing for me was slow in the mornings a few largemouths here and there. I moved down into the narrow portion of the lake around lake marker 8 and lost a dandy( at least 8lbs) No smallmouths though. Any advise?

    jakeAugust 20th, 2007 at 3:35 pm

i caught a small. off of a plug while i was trolling. it was late in the evening of a point. 4.3 pounds

I would be glad to help you out. How big of a pond do you own? I suggest only largemouth.

My son and I plan to take a trip to Blue Ridge Lake this April. We have never fished it before and we look forward to hooking up to some of those smallies. We would like to camp on or near the lake so that we can lauch the boat early am. Could I get some feed back on the best place to camp.
    thanks

start at daybreak with a 16 adams patern. 8:30 to 9:00 put a size 18 midge on a 20 inch dropper behind the dry fly. when all else fails, use a medium sized olive wooly bugger, prefferably with a gold bead head.
ALWAYS USE FLOROCARBON TIPPET!!!!!!!!!!!! preferably 2.5 to 4.5 pounds. and to save you a rumbling stomach, lunch thirty is a good time to call it a day. they usually cut off at that time. unless the fishing is just intense, i don’t stay in the water past 11:30.
oh yeah, a size 14 or 16 redass is also a secret weapon that i use. i always say that 80% of fly fishing is in the cast. if you can get that part down right, the rest is just finding out what they want for dinner.

due to the cold and very clear water its best to fish walley at night.plus their is plenty of small mouth to be had. blue back’s in the lake is one major problem for all the fish, these things will destroy eggs and beds these fish move in large schools and are horible on some fish populations due to theire diets.. they are great for growing fish to eat but never the less they are there..

jigging minows and spoons is a good walley method but most of the eye’s in blue ridge are small compared to some of the ones we are catching in carters.

hey jim, fishing should be hot in may.the river down from the dam is always full of fresh trout from 8- 24 inches.may is a great time to be in the area.the lake has plenty of water and should stay that way for a while. as far as renting a boat you can check with blue ridge marina, they have pontoons for rent.
