Gunfire Around The Lake

OK, it’s not a rare occurrence to hear gunfire while lounging on your boat in a wooded cove. After all, 75 percent is of the lake’s shoreline is US National Forest.

So it’s a nice day (60-degrees and sunny), and I’m driving home through the neighborhood with the windows down and, “pop-pop…pop-pop-pop” to my immediate left. My first reaction was a flashback to the first and only time I heard gunfire in downtown Atlanta: incoming–duck and punch. Second was a knee-jerk rubberneck to the left to see a guy not twenty yards from me pulling off shots, parallel to the road, from a .22-long rifle.

Ah, cool, not a high powered rifle and it’s not pointed at me….oh yeah, I’m in Blue Ridge, just a guy sighting his rifle for the next big squirrel hunt. To my relief, I see he’s shooting into a dirt bank. No harm done, pretty sure he’s legal until he fires across the road. Nonetheless, I think I’ll ride my bike on the other end of our very residential (relatively speaking) neighborhood. He even courteously paused target practice as I subconsciously continued past him into his line of fire on my merry way home. Just another day at the office in the mountains–beats traffic and AK-47s on most days.

I enjoy hearing about the comings and goings of Blue Ridge. We have a home about 5 minutes from the lake (vacation/future retirement) and are looking forward to the day in the not too distant future when we can call Blue Ridge our permanent residence. Keep up the good work!!!

Thanks Patty. As you probably have already realized, I don’t think you’ll regret retiring here. I was talking to my wife the other night, and we both realized we haven’t heard a soul complain about buying a second home or moving here full time. In fact it’s been quite the opposite. For us, it just keeps getting better. All things considered, I think it’s the best small town in Georgia, and I’m officially coining the phrase, you-heard-it-here-first: “The Best Small Town In Georgia”.

I “found” you by googling “blue ridge cam” and i now
have added you to my favorite list. I just bought in December a house on the Toccoa River in the Riverwalk
development. That’s the good news… the bad is that the previous owner asked to rent it back for 5 months so i just sit and wait until May.( Its not too bad as i am living in Miami). So i am keeping up thru you websites and a subcription to the local town newspaper. Thanks for the cams and weather info

So the bad news is you’re wintering in Miami? Life is good. :) Thanks for popping in Miguel.

I am a long time fan of your webcams. I enjoyed your earlier views of the Cohuttas and now particularly like being able to visit downtown Blue Ridge, albeit via cyberspace, whenever I please.

We have a second home in Cashes Valley and can’t wait to get back up there. Our time in Blue Ridge is a welcome relief from the madness that is S. Florida.

Many thanks for your webcam efforts!
